On the fifth anniversary of the January 6th insurrection, it felt like the right moment to write to my representatives directly. I'm sharing the letter here as a template, in case it's useful to you too.
Dear Representative [name],
Dear Senator [name],
Dear Governor [name],
Please take a strong public stand against the policies of Donald Trump now. Each of the following issues would have dire consequences for our Republic if left unaddressed:
- Unitary Executive power — Several pending court cases, if decided in the president's favor, would plunge us into a more authoritarian structure of government.
- A police state today — Armed, masked federal agents are operating on our streets. Crime is a civilian policing matter, not a military one.
- A return to the Spoils System — The pending case of Trump v. Slaughter threatens to undo 143 years of civil-service reform.
- Threats to the power of the purse — Impoundment of congressionally appropriated funds threatens a fundamental check on executive power.
- A new imperialism — Talk of regime change and threats against Canada and Greenland echo an older, darker era of foreign policy.
- Threats to the civil service — AFGE v. Trump threatens to end professional, merit-based federal employment as we know it.
- Threats to independent agencies — A series of executive orders aims to bring independent watchdog agencies fully under presidential control.
- Threats to a free press — Lawsuits against the BBC, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, PBS, and NPR all threaten the press's independence.
- The lies — On election fraud, on the true state of the economy, on who actually pays for tariffs.
- The grift and corruption — World Liberty Financial and other crypto ventures appear to be enriching the Trump family directly, with troubling pay-to-play implications.
- Threats to the rule of law — Put simply, the president is a convicted felon.
Do not be intimidated. We will stand behind you if you take a stand.

Feel free to adapt this letter and send it to your own representatives. Individual letters matter less than the volume of them arriving together.
